Since 2019, the School on the Bus has been providing temporary education for children homeless and displaced by the war in the Hazano refugee camp in Idlib, Syria. Due to military action or precautionary closures, many educational institutions in the Idlib region have been closed, schools destroyed and families driven into homelessness, especially in the countryside. »When we fled here, there was no school and they started bringing the buses. If these buses were to stop coming, we would have no education and learn nothing« said Hussein Ali Azkour, a student.
The still existing and active educational institutions in the region could only take care of about half of the children of school age. While the bus was initially planned for only about 50 children, the number of participants rose to well over 375 at last count. More and more children lined up, hoping to be among those who could stay on the bus - even if only for a few hours.
